Getting about

Outside the entrance to Baan Suanrimsai next to 7/11, you can catch the local Tuk Tuk type minibus and travel to and from town (or anywhere on the route) for just 10 Baht per person.

The trucks are painted bright green and you just wave
them down and when you want to get off, push the buzzer. It is a great service and a pleasure to mix and meet all the locals!

Otherwise there is an abundance of taxi, tuk-tuks and motorcycle taxis, here you will have to negotiate a price from around 50 - 80 baht.

(We can also arrange a private car and driver to and from Bangkok airport, charged at 2,200 baht each way, paid direct to the driver.)

'Baan Suanrimsai' Full description

Baan Suanrimsai' is a quiet 2 bedroom 4 fl apartment, modest size 62 sq m accessible by lift from the main entrance, public areas and corridors are open and wide.
The apartment is to the side of the building facing an attractive Thai style hotel below.

The Sea is visible to the right and there are hills to the left. While there are other residents and holiday makers the property rarely feels busy, you will often have the pools and fitness center to yourself.

An early start is worthwhile to go down by the pool and experience the sunrise over the sea.
Our location is away from the busy town centre about 3km south next to the long beach, night life here is quiet. Hua Hin town centre, the night market, bars, plenty of Thai and western restaurants are just a few minutes away.
Hua hin has an amazing range of eating places from cheap and cheerful noodles on the street to some of the finest restaurants. We enjoy walking so the long beach is an excellent place to chill out, run and swim. You can leave the beach at numerous points to find coffee shops, noodle stalls and small stores or treat yourself to some excellent food at several 5 star hotels.
Go down to the beach and turn right just a short walk is a temple on a hill and local fishing village, there are several goods restaurants there worth visiting.

The beach pool with children’s pool boasts good views out to sea, a tree as a centre feature provides excellent shade over sun beds.

The beach runs from Hua hin town next to the Hilton hotel south 5km to Khao Takiab, here several restaurants. A 20 minute walk from the apartment to the right leads you to a Thai temple on a hill with a monkey sanctuary, a great place to explore with excellent views. The sea is usually warm and clear, Thai massage, pony rides, surfboards, sailing and banana boats are all available along the beach but not directly outside the apartment.

Floating Market

There are two new floating markets with hundreds of small stalls selling food clothes and interesting handicrafts, both markets are close to each other so you can easily vist both in one day.

'Hua hin floating market' is about 2 klms along Hua hin road 112, off Petchakasem road just south of Hua hin.

'Sam Phan Nam' market is is little further and is our favorite, both markets are well sign posted.

Taxi is the only transport available for now but expect a bus service to start soon from central Hua hin.

See the locations on our google map.

Places of interest

There is a new Arts market called "Cicadas"  on the main road heading towards  Hua Hin next to the Hyatt. It's open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings from late afternoon.

A lovely market, quite different from the usual T-Shirts, Sunglasses etc markets you see around Thailand.

The atmosphere is really friendly , frequented by both Thai and international visitors, try the out door food court, see live music and concerts where the audience are sometimes invited to join in.

There are some very good Restaurants and Bars near Baan Suanrimsai. One we liked was called Chao Lay which is a Seafood Restaurant although it does have meat and other dishes. One excellent dish is the Fried Chicken and Cashew nuts!! To get to the restaurant, turn left out of the Baan Suanrimsai and it is about 100 metres on the opposite side of the road.

Thanks to Richard & Verena for this.

Driving in Thailand

Driving in Thailand is on the left. ( most of the time)
Thailand, has an extensive road network across the country with reasonable sign directions in both Thai and English.

The countryside is generally flat in the central regions but still very attractive particularly in the northern hills and along the southern beaches.

As you know most Thai people are usually warm, friendly and courteous, however this courtesy and serenity often changes once behind the wheel.

The level of driving tuition here is extremely poor particularly with drivers from the countryside. Driving licenses have been available on the black market for many years hence many drivers receive no tuition at all !. Most drivers do not understand about driving a safe distance from the vehicle in front or the distance required to stop, so you must always allow for this.

The cities and towns including Hua hin are usually quite busy, however the roads are generally wide enough and reasonably maintained.

Many roads have dual carriageways with fast moving traffic, but you will see many breaks in the road for traffic to 'U' turn, this poor road management system results in some quite dangerous situations particularly where large trucks turn in front of fast oncoming traffic.
Be very careful when approaching these 'U" turns.

Traffic lights are often controlled manually by policemen in a booth at the intersection, as a result there is little or no co ordination between one set of lights and the next, traffic is often kept waiting up to 4 minutes !
The two main sets of lights in the center of Hua hin are particularly slow to change so expect long delays in the main street.

Most locals find reversing a major challenge, so expect delays in car parks or confined places.

Given the amount of creative driving in Thailand you need to be vigilant at all times.

If you still have the courage to rent a car read on........

Car rental

Most cars in Thailand have automatic transmission which A small car such as the Toyota Vios or Honda Jazz costs about 1,000 Baht per day or 1,500 Baht per day for the slightly larger Toyota Camry including insurance, both are ideal for driving in Thailand. An international licence is advised, remember to check the insurance cover provided by the rental company and do obtain advice on what to do if you are involved in an accident. See links below for car rental.
